In May, the weather conditions in Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Botswana are generally characterized by dry and cooler temperatures as the region transitions into winter. Here’s a summary of the weather for each country:
Zambia
Temperature: Daytime highs average around 25°C (77°F), while nighttime lows can drop to about 11°C (52°F).
Rainfall: May is typically dry, with very little to no rainfall (average monthly rainfall is about 4 mm.
Sunshine: Expect approximately 9 hours of sunshine per day with low humidity levels.
Zimbabwe
Temperature: Highs range from the upper 70s to low 80s°F (around 24-28°C) during the day, while nighttime temperatures can drop to the low to mid-50s°F (10-15°C).
Rainfall: May marks the beginning of winter; thus, it is generally dry with minimal rain.
Conditions: The weather is pleasant, making it a great time for outdoor activities and wildlife viewing.
Botswana
Temperature: Daytime temperatures typically reach around 25°C (77°F), while nighttime lows can fall to about 8°C (46°F).
Rainfall: Rain is infrequent in May, with average monthly rainfall around 11 mm, and usually only a couple of rainy days.
Sunshine: Expect about 9 hours of sunshine per day with low humidity levels.
Overall, May is an excellent time to visit these countries due to the comfortable temperatures and dry conditions, ideal for wildlife viewing and outdoor activities.
Remember that laundry service is included in our package.
Due to restrictions on internal flights within Africa, the limit is 1 suitcase per person that is a soft duffel bag that does not exceed 20 kilograms (approx. 44 pounds) with dimensions (H) 35 in x (W) 28 in x (L) 17 in ((H) 90cm + (W) 72cm + (L) 45cm). These limitations are subject to change.
In addition, we recommend a day pack/back pack for day-to-day and as a carry-on instead of a purse. Suitcases and bags should be able to withstand plenty of handling. We recommend bringing a soft duffel bag with wheels.
The secret for successful packing on safari is MULTIPLE LIGHT LAYERS. Bring clothes that are cool, light and comfortable because fall temperatures are warmer during the day, but cool in the early morning and evenings when we are often in a game drive. Remember to bring a swimming suit for your private plunge pool!
The most practical items to pack are:
- Hat, sunglasses and sunblock, as the sun will be strong.
- Mosquito repellent, we recommend Ben’s Tick & Insect Repellent.
- Comfortable walking shoes, such as closed-toe Merrells.
- For game viewing, a couple of neutral-toned items will be useful (Khaki, brown, white and beige colors).
- For the evening, similar attire to daytime
- Light cotton tops and cotton trousers/shorts
- Heavier jacket and hat for evenings out and early morning/sunset game drives
- Bathing suit
- Binoculars for game viewing
- Plenty of photography equipment!
We suggest that you have a physical check-up before your trip, and discuss the type of trip in which you are participating with your physician. Many large cities have a travel clinic or health center with doctors and nurses that are experts in travel immunization.
The CDC (Centers for Disease Control) recommends updating all routine booster shots for travel to Africa to include the following.
- Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis
- Influenza
Visit the CDC website or call toll-free, 24-hours at 1-800-CDC-INFO (800-232-4636) or WHO (World Health Organization).
Anti-malarial medication is recommended for this tour. Consult your doctor or a specialist travel clinic for the latest advice concerning malaria prophylaxis, as it changes regularly. Whether you take oral prophylaxis or not, always use mosquito repellent.
Standards of hygiene in relation to food health and safety are generally high in the lodges in which we’ll be staying during our program. It is safe to eat fresh fruit, vegetables and salads, and put ice in your drinks at our lodges. Fish, meat and chicken are of excellent quality, so there is no need to limit yourself when enjoying the local cuisine. We do recommend that you drink only bottled water anywhere.
Your Singles Travel International team will provide up to the minute information in our Final Vacation Details and Meetup Info document 21 days prior to departure.
The electricity supply in Zambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana is 220/230 volts AC, 50 HZ.
- Type D: Three round pins in a triangular configuration
- Type G: Three rectangular pins in a triangular configuration
If you are planning to bring a video camera charger or any other electrical device, please bring voltage and plug adaptors where appropriate. Our lodges will provide hair dryers, irons and other electrical amenities upon request.
You will need the converter in addition to the adapter to STEP DOWN the electrical current rom 230 – 110 (US) or your appliance will melt.
Some devices are dual voltage and will be listed on the back of the appliance. When the voltage reading is listed as a range of numbers, like 110V–220V or 100-240V, the device can handle AC voltage outlets from all over the world. This is considered a “dual voltage” or “world-wide voltage” device.
If in doubt, protect your device. It could cost you 10 x more to replace it and nothing is worth negatively impacting your vacation!
