– Soft-sided bags only, no wheels or frames
– Maximum weight of 44 lbs (20 kg), which includes hand luggage
– Size Restrictions: 10 in (25 cm) wide by 12 in (30 cm) high and 24 in (62 cm) long.

In addition to the main piece of luggage, we recommend a day pack/back pack for day-to-day and as a carry-on instead of a purse and must be within the total weight restriction of 44 lbs (20 kg).
The secret for successful packing on this safari is MULTIPLE LIGHT LAYERS, tailored to cool mornings/evenings and warm, dry days in Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa in May. Daytime highs are generally in the mid‑70s to low‑80s°F (24–28°C), while nights and early mornings can drop into the 40s–50s°F (5–13°C), especially in Hwange and the Okavango Delta. Remember that laundry service is included at our luxury lodges, allowing us to pack fewer items and still stay fresh throughout the journey.
(Please note that no camouflage/ military-like clothes are allowed in Zimbabwe)
The most practical items to pack are:
- Toiletries: All of our luxury properties provide shampoo, conditioner, soap and body lotion in all ensuite bathrooms. Hairdryers are available in all lodges except Somalisa.
-
Game Viewing Attire: Neutral‑toned outfits (khaki, olive, tan, stone, beige, cream) that work for both bush and city, blend with the environment and photograph well. Avoid bright white and very vivid colors for drives and camouflage/ military-like clothes are forbidden in Zimbabwe.
-
For the evening, similar attire to daytime, with the option to “dress up” slightly in Cape Town by pairing your safari trousers with a nicer top or scarf; evenings are smart casual rather than formal.
- 3–4 light tops (a mix of short‑sleeve and long‑sleeve in breathable fabrics such as cotton or technical quick‑dry), in neutral tones that work for both bush and city (khaki, olive, tan, stone, beige, cream). Please note that no camouflage/ military-like clothes are allowed in Zimbabwe.
-
2–3 bottoms total: 2 pairs of lightweight long trousers or jeans and 1 pair of neutral shorts for warmer mid‑day temperatures during game drives and around camp.
-
1 lightweight warm layer such as a thin fleece or packable down jacket for cool mornings/evenings at Thorntree on the Zambezi and in Cape Town.
-
1 additional outer layer such as a windproof shell or softshell jacket for the chilliest early‑morning and sunset game drives in Hwange National Park and the Okavango Delta.
-
1 warm hat (beanie) and a light scarf or buff, plus thin gloves specifically for open‑vehicle drives in Hwange and the Delta, where predawn temperatures can feel quite cold despite sunny days.
-
Hat with a brim, sunglasses and high‑SPF sunblock, as the sun is still strong and days are typically clear and bright.
-
Mosquito repellent (such as Ben’s Tick & Insect Repellent); insect activity generally lessens in May but is still present around water and at dusk, especially along the Zambezi and in the Delta.
-
Comfortable closed‑toe walking shoes (Merrell‑type or light hikers) suitable for game drives, camp walks and airport transfers, plus 1 pair of lightweight sandals or slides for the lodge and pools.
-
4–5 sets of underwear and 3 pairs of socks, relying on lodge laundry to keep your load light while staying comfortable across all four destinations.
-
Light cotton or quick‑dry tops and cotton or technical trousers/shorts that can dry quickly after washing and work across Thorntree Lodge, Somalisa, Atzaró Okavango and Cape Town.
-
Bathing suit for your private plunge pools and lodge pools at Thorntree and Atzaró Okavango, as well as hotel pools in Cape Town.
-
Binoculars for game viewing so you can fully enjoy sightings in Hwange and the Okavango Delta, where wildlife viewing in May is excellent.
-
Plenty of photography equipment (camera, lenses, memory cards, batteries and a small power bank) packed as compactly as possible; wildlife viewing in these areas during May’s clear, dry conditions is ideal for photographers.
To stay within the 44‑lb, 1‑duffel allowance on internal flights, we recommend a soft‑sided duffel without wheels plus a small daypack instead of a purse, a cohesive neutral color palette so every top works with every bottom, and travel‑size/shared toiletries (sunscreen, repellent, etc.) to avoid extra weight while still being fully prepared for your luxury safari and Cape Town finale.
We suggest that you have a physical check-up before your trip, and discuss the type of trip in which you are participating with your physician. Many large cities have a travel clinic or health center with doctors and nurses that are experts in travel immunization.
The CDC (Centers for Disease Control) recommends updating all routine booster shots for travel to Africa to include the following.
- Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis
- Influenza
Visit the CDC website or call toll-free, 24-hours at 1-800-CDC-INFO (800-232-4636) or WHO (World Health Organization).
Anti-malarial medication is recommended for this tour. Consult your doctor or a specialist travel clinic for the latest advice concerning malaria prophylaxis, as it changes regularly. Whether you take oral prophylaxis or not, always use mosquito repellent.
Standards of hygiene in relation to food health and safety are generally high in the lodges in which we’ll be staying during our program. It is safe to eat fresh fruit, vegetables and salads, and put ice in your drinks at our lodges. Fish, meat and chicken are of excellent quality, so there is no need to limit yourself when enjoying the local cuisine. We do recommend that you drink only bottled water anywhere.
Your Singles Travel International team will provide up to the minute information in our Final Vacation Details and Meetup Info document 21 days prior to departure.
The electricity supply in Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa is 220-240 volts AC, 50 HZ. All properties will have charging stations in the communal areas where you may charge your electronic devices. Most camps will have electricity available in the suites / tents.
Most modern electronic devices are dual voltage and specifics will be listed on the back of the appliance. When the voltage reading is listed as a range of numbers, like 110V–220V or 100-240V, the device can handle AC voltage outlets from all over the world. This is considered a “dual voltage” or “world-wide voltage” device. If in doubt, protect your device. It could cost you 10 x more to replace it and nothing is worth negatively impacting your vacation!
Simple packing list for US travelers visiting all four countries:
- 1–2 × Type M adapter (grounded, accepts US 2‑ and 3‑prong).
- 1 × Type D adapter.
- 1 × compact universal adapter that includes Type C and Type G.
- Your usual electronics with dual‑voltage chargers (phone, laptop, camera).
- Optional: dual‑voltage hair dryer/iron if needed for personal care.
This combination will let you plug in everywhere in Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and South Africa without overpacking.
Specifications by country:
Zambia : Electric plugs C, D & G 230 V 50H z.
Zimbabwe : Electrical plug D & G. 220 V and 50H z.
Botswana : Electric plug M, or G (rare) 230 V , 50H z.
South Africa: Electric plugs D, M & N. 230 V, 50 Hz.
-
- Type D: Three round pins in a triangular configuration
- Type G: Three rectangular pins in a triangular configuration
- Type N: Three pins (modern South African standard per SANS 164-2).
- Type C: The two‑pin “Europlug” is very common as a plug on phone chargers, small electronics, etc.
We’ll visit four different currency zones. Bring a mix of credit/debit cards and some US dollars in cash, brand new bills in small denominations ($1, $5, $10, $20); then withdraw or exchange locally as needed. All of your expenses are included in our package so any purchases will be for shopping, tips and donations.
Practical Tips For The Whole Trip
- Best strategy: Use ATMs for local cash in each country, and pay by card where possible for good bank exchange rates.
- Bring: A primary and backup card, plus enough US dollar cash in small and medium denominations (new bills only) for tips, and when cards or ATMs are not available.
- Avoid: Street changers and very poor‑rate exchanges; stick to banks, ATMs, and licensed bureaus.
Zambia
- Currency: Zambian Kwacha (ZMW).
- How to pay: Cards are widely accepted in cities and lodges; cash is useful for tips, markets, and small purchases.
- Exchanging: ATMs and banks in towns offer fair rates when you withdraw with a debit card; you can also change US dollars at banks and official exchange bureaus.
Zimbabwe
- Currency: Officially the ZiG (Zimbabwe Gold), but US dollars are still widely used in everyday transactions, especially in tourist areas.
- How to pay: Many hotels, tour operators, and larger shops prefer or quote in US dollars; cards accepted in more formal establishments, but not everywhere.
- Exchanging: Bring clean, newer US dollar notes; you can pay directly in USD in many places, which often avoids confusion with fast‑moving local exchange rates.
Botswana
- Currency: Botswana Pula (BWP).
- How to pay: Cards are commonly accepted in towns and lodges; you’ll want some Pula for tips and small purchases.
- Exchanging: Pula is effectively a “closed” currency, so you usually get it after arrival at ATMs or banks; US dollars, pounds, and euros are accepted for exchange and at many lodges.
- Notes: South African Rand may be accepted near the border and in some tourist hubs, but you’ll get better value using Pula.
South Africa
- Currency: South African Rand (ZAR).
- How to pay: Credit and debit cards are widely accepted (similar to the US) in shops, restaurants, and hotels; cash is useful for small tips and incidentals.
- Exchanging: ATMs are plentiful and usually the easiest way to get Rand; banks and official bureaus in cities and airports can exchange US dollars.1

Internet Connections:
-
Thorntree River Lodge, Zambia (Livingstone)
Complimentary Wi‑Fi is available in some public areas of the lodge (not guaranteed in rooms), and speeds are generally fine for email and basic browsing but can be slow or intermittent due to the remote river setting. -
Somalisa, Zimbabwe (Hwange)
Somalisa offers Wi‑Fi on the premises, usually in the main/common areas, and guests report it as impressively fast for such a remote camp, but the emphasis is still on unplugging rather than heavy internet use.
-
Atzaró Okavango, Botswana
Atzaró provides complimentary Wi‑Fi in all suites and in select lodge areas (such as the art gallery and boutique), suitable for browsing, email, and WhatsApp; bandwidth is limited and not ideal for streaming, and there is no regular mobile phone signal at the lodge. -
The Commodore Hotel, Cape Town
The Commodore offers free Wi‑Fi throughout the hotel, with internet access available in all areas and guest rooms, and this is typically strong enough for normal usage such as email, social media, and general web access.
Using your own plan when not on Wi‑Fi
When we are away from lodge/hotel Wi‑Fi (for example, on game drives, transfers, or in very remote areas), mobile data coverage is limited, especially deep inside national parks and wilderness areas in Botswana and Zambia. In or near major towns and cities (Livingstone, Victoria Falls area, Maun, Kasane, Cape Town), a data signal is usually available via local networks, roaming on your U.S. plan, or by using an eSIM/local SIM, but speeds may drop and coverage is sporadic once we leave populated areas.
Please be aware that the available Wi-Fi is limited to basic functions such as sending and receiving emails and WhatsApps. This ‘bush Wi-Fi’ is not strong enough for video conferences, online streaming, etc. Please note that there is no mobile signal in the bush.
-
International roaming with your existing carrier (e.g., AT&T, Verizon, T‑Mobile) if your plan includes data in South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Botswana. Check your carrier’s country list and day‑pass pricing in advance, and expect that in remote safari areas you may still have little or no signal even if roaming is “included.”Purchasing a local SIM or multi‑country eSIM that covers these four countries; these can offer better value and more reliable data in cities and along main routes, but coverage will still be weak or absent in the most remote safari locations.
All countries you will visit have laws against the purchase and export of certain items, including antiquities, national cultural property and certain animal products, especially endangered species (ivory, rhino horn, tortoise shell, coral, feathers, etc.). Additionally, the United States has laws prohibiting the import of certain items, which include many of the same things. You face having your purchase confiscated and/or heavy fines for exporting or importing prohibited items.
On return to the U.S., your baggage is subject to search by U.S. Customs. Currently, you are permitted to bring back $800 of goods duty free. Persons aged 21 or over may also bring in one liter of liquor and one carton of cigarettes. If you plan to purchase a lot of souvenirs or expensive items, it is important to retain all purchase receipts. However, please note that U.S. Customs may not accept a receipt as true cost if it seems unusually low for the estimated value of the item. You may access the regulations and restrictions governing US Customs on their official website, click here to learn more.

Follow the enclosed, signposted walkway directly to the hotel entrance; the walk is approximately 5–10 minutes and you do not need a taxi or shuttle.
Your tour price does not include international airfare, meals and beverages not specified in the itinerary, or gratuities for local guides, rangers, and lodge staff.
Singles Travel International Concierge – 10-14 days ($150-$210)
Since 1993, we have found that our members receive the highest quality of care when our Singles Travel International Concierge Team is recognized directly by our travelers. To that end, a gratuity of approximately $15 per person, per day is customary and serves as a wonderful way to thank your Concierge for exceptional service. You’ll have the opportunity to offer this at the conclusion of your tour. Gratuities are always at your discretion and appreciated only for service that exceeds expectations.
Local Services at ABC Lodges in Zambia, Somalisa and Atzaro – 9 days ($270-$405)

In May, the weather conditions in Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Botswana are generally characterized by dry and cooler temperatures as the region transitions into winter. Here’s a summary of the weather for each country:

Rainfall: May marks the beginning of winter; thus, it is generally dry with minimal rain.
Conditions: The weather is pleasant, making it a great time for outdoor activities and wildlife viewing.
Botswana

Sunshine: Expect about 6 hours of sunshine per day with generally low heat and humidity levels.
Remember that laundry service is included in our package.
Due to limited space in vehicles and bush aircrafts, luggage must adhere to the following standards:
– Soft-sided bags only, no wheels or frames
– Maximum weight of 44 lbs (20 kg), which includes hand luggage
– Size Restrictions: 10 in (25 cm) wide by 12 in (30 cm) high and 24 in (62 cm) long.
For extra luggage, contact us to inquire about booking an additional seat on the aircraft – subject to availability. To ensure proper loading, the pilot will also need the weight of each passenger. Individuals over 265 lbs (120 kg) may need to purchase an additional seat.

- Optional: dual‑voltage hair dryer/iron if needed for personal care.
This combination will let you plug in everywhere in Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and South Africa without overpacking.
Specifications by country:
Zambia : Electric plugs C, D & G 230 V 50H z.
Zimbabwe : Electrical plug D & G. 220 V and 50H z.
Botswana : Electric plug M, or G (rare) 230 V , 50H z.
South Africa: Electric plugs D, M & N. 230 V, 50 Hz.
-
- Type D: Three round pins in a triangular configuration
- Type G: Three rectangular pins in a triangular configuration

Botswana
Temperature: Daytime temperatures typically reach around 25°C (77°F), while nighttime lows can fall to about 8°C (46°F).
