Danube Dreams Plus Prague: Our 9-Day Adventure from Prague to Budapest

Hello to all fellow adventurers!  Thirteen of our fellow travellers had the pleasure of cruising the Danube River in Europe.  Our recent 9-day journey—starting with two unforgettable days in Prague and sailing the majestic Danube River to Budapest—was a truly exceptional experience for our group of single travelers aged 50+.

✨ Part 1: The Magic of Prague (A Perfect Solo Start)

Our adventure began not on the water, but in the enchanting “City of a Hundred Spires,” Prague. Starting with a few days here was the perfect way for our group to connect, shake off the jet lag, and explore one of Europe’s most beautiful cities.

Part 2: Cruise Highlights (From Waltzes to Wine)

The cruise itself was a tapestry of historic cities and stunning natural beauty. The constant, beautiful scenery gliding past our windows was simply mesmerizing.

German Charms: Regensburg and Passau

Our journey into the heart of Bavaria brought us to two magnificent German cities where history truly comes alive.

Regensburg: A Medieval Marvel

One of the best-preserved medieval cities in Germany, Regensburg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walking its cobblestone streets was like stepping back a thousand years.

  • Local Cuisine: For a true taste of history, many of us stopped at the Historische Wurstkuchl (Historic Sausage Kitchen), a riverside stall.  We didn’t miss the chance to grab a plate of famous charcoal-grilled sausages served simply with sauerkraut and sweet mustard, it is the quintessential Bavarian riverfront lunch.

Passau: The City of Three Rivers

Known as the Dreiflüssestadt (City of Three Rivers), Passau is where the Danube, Inn, and Ilz Rivers converge. The confluence creates a beautiful, multi-hued spectacle you can only see from the water.

  • Baroque Beauty: We explored the Baroque Old Town, admired the pastel-colored facades, and visited St. Stephen’s Cathedral, which is home to one of the world’s largest pipe organs. The sound is absolutely magnificent!

Linz: Cakes and Culture

Linz offers a wonderful mix of historical baroque architecture and modern artistic flair. Our group enjoyed visiting the vast Hauptplatz (Main Square), which provided a perfect central point for exploration. But no visit is complete without a treat: be sure to try a piece of Linzer Torte, a delicious lattice-topped pastry that is celebrated as the world’s oldest known cake recipe!

Dürnstein: Richard the Lionheart’s Prison

As we sailed into Austria, the scenery shifted to rolling vineyards and famous cultural hubs.

This tiny, incredibly charming village in the Wachau Valley is picture-postcard perfection. It’s famous for two things: its wine and a royal prisoner!

  • The Blue Tower: The iconic blue-and-white spire of the Stift Dürnstein Abbey is the first thing you see as you approach—a gorgeous contrast against the lush green hills.
  • Castle Ruins: A short but rewarding hike took some of our group up to the ruins of the Kuenringer Castle, where King Richard the Lionheart was held captive in the 12th century. The view of the Danube from the top is unparalleled and definitely worth the climb!

🎶 Vienna: The City of Music

The imperial grandeur of Vienna was breathtaking. We took a city tour to see the Hofburg Palace and St. Stephen’s Cathedral. The optional evening Viennese Waltz Concert was a highlight for many, a perfect excuse to dress up and enjoy the city’s musical legacy with new friends.

🎨 Bratislava: Charm and Cobblestones

The capital of Slovakia offered a delightful contrast—a compact, charming city that was easily walkable and full of character.

  • Old Town Exploration: We enjoyed a leisurely stroll through the pedestrian-only Old Town.  It was a wonderful way to pause and reflect on the incredible journey through four different countries in just a few days.

🇭🇺 A Grand Finale in Budapest

What a magnificent destination to conclude our trip! Approaching Budapest by water at night, with the Parliament Building and Castle Hill dramatically lit, is an image I’ll never forget.

  • Buda and Pest: Our final days were spent exploring the two sides of the city. On the Buda side, we took a bus up Castle Hill for panoramic views of the entire city. On the Pest side, we admired the grandeur of the Parliament Building and the moving Shoes on the Danube Bank memorial.
