Tasting #2 – Winning Whites – Cirò Bianco & Donna Giovanna
Calabria is known primarily for red wine, but you’d be surprised to taste how lovely the white wines are. With Eileen we’ll discover two white wines (Cirò Bianco & Donna Giovanna), both made from the same grape–Greco Bianco–but harvested at different times. You’ll see different colors, different aromas on the nose and different tastes on the palate. And, you’ll be surprised to learn that there’s a lot more than fish that goes great with white wine!
Tasting #3 – Robust Red – Cirò Rosso Classico
Tonight, we’ll taste Cirò Rosso Classico wine, made from Gaglioppo grapes, the signature grape of Calabria, Italy. This grape was brought to the region by the Greeks 2,500 years ago. It is one of the oldest produced grape wines in Italy.
Tasting #4 – Bold and Beautiful – Lakinio
As a finale, Eileen will introduce you to the type of wines that are truly characteristic of the appellation, Isola di Capo Rizzuto, which is located right on the Sea of Ionia. This vineyard also makes their own mozzarella di bufala; in fact, the bufala roam the farm next to the vineyard! Lakinio is made using two indigenous grapes that are representative of Calabria — 50% Gaglioppo and 50% Magliocco.
